Oak Column Capital

JOINERY

Carved wood column capital with leaves and flowers

This Oak column was designed with carved details reflecting flora found in the woodland surrounding the house. The use of tall fern fronds spanning the height of the capital and beech leaves to the lower half reflects the overlapping hierarchy of foliage in a similar manner to the classic style of a corinthian capital. To finish, a square abacus was added to match the corner columns adjacent on the gallery, with the column body fluted to add depth and shadow play.

A part of the enjoyment in designing bespoke items for clients are the design iterations and sketches that come before the finished product. Here is one of the earlier designs for the gate.
